Margaret River, WA
If you're a Western Australian, you're lucky enough to be a stone's throw from what is regarded as one of the best Chardonnay producing areas in the world. Margaret River is bordered by surfer dotted indigo waves, a snow white coastline giving way to rich green pastures and vineyards. Wash the sea spray from your lips with a cheeky French oaked number; not too dry, not too tart. With about 150 producers, the region is a four hour drive south from Perth. Take a horse drawn wagon from cellar doors to farmers markets when scouting for wedding locations, flowers and menu ideas!
Granite Belt, QLD
If you're a Northerner, from the tropical climates of sunny Queensland, head to Granite belt. Centred around the main town of Stanthorpe, the state's primary wine region is situated at an altitude of around 900 metres above sea level, affording a cooler climate for the vines. Leave the beach behind and head into the hills for a cool forest change, in hunt of the perfect Semillon to wet your wedding whistles.
Hunter Valley, NSW
Head south and you'll find yourself traipsing through the vines of New South Wales' iconic Hunter Valley. Here you'll meet winemakers world renowned for their crisp dry whites , particularly Verdelho. Mixed into the rich selection of cellar doors you will have to choose from are boutique breweries, distilleries and cheese makers. To balance all of the drinking and eating that you'll do whilst searching for your wedding venue, grab a couple of hire bicycles for the day. Take in the fresh country air and vibrant countryside as you pedal from vineyard to vineyard.
Barossa Valley, SA
Southerners can delight in having the specialists in rich, jammy Shiraz right on their doorstep. The Barossa Valley is a bold region of many a spice and flavour, much like it's signature wine. In suitable style, the German heritage of the area makes for some incredible local produce in the form of meats, sausages and heavy cream cakes. Absorb the culture of Australia's biggest wine producer from the back of a motorised trike as you cruise through some of South Australia's stunning countryside in search of that perfect balance of ripe plum and spicy tannin characters.
Yarra Valley, Vic
Melbourne-ers will surely have made the short trip out of the city to the cascading vineyards of the Yarra Valley once in their lifetime. Here you'll come across producers of exquisite cool climate wines, delicate in taste, big in character. Perfect for lovers of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, boutique wineries are this Victorian region's claim to fame. Before checking out the produce and getting lost in the vines, catch the early bird's worm and watch the sunrise over a patchwork landscape from one of the many hot air balloons that pattern the sky on quiet still mornings.
